About the Workshop
Emerging research suggests that mindfulness interventions can help or hinder trauma survivors, raising a crucial question for clinicians: How can you be prepared to minimize the potential dangers of mindfulness for traumatized people, while leveraging its powerful benefits at the same time?
Designed exclusively for clinicians, this online workshop—led by acclaimed author and trauma specialist, David Treleaven, Ph.D.—will equip you with the tools you need to safely and effectively use mindfulness interventions when working with clients who have experienced trauma.
David’s training covers a range of topics including the potential for dysregulation caused by meditation, recognizing symptoms of traumatic stress, and evidence-based interventions based on empirical research. Additionally, participants will learn tools and modifications to manage dysregulated arousal, traumatic flashbacks, and trauma-related dissociation. Participants will improve their ability to provide support to their clients by learning how to use specific trauma-informed modifications and develop curricula and interventions that actively prevent re-traumatization.
Learning Objectives
Through lecture, case study, and experiential practice, participants will have the opportunity to:
- Identify the range of possible experiences that can arise from meditation practice, particularly in the context of mindfulness-based interventions
- Practice experiential strategies to promote nervous system regulation, such as titration and pendulation
- Integrate contemporary research regarding the self-regulatory benefits of meditation practice with the physiological mechanisms of post-traumatic stress
- Describe standards of trauma-informed practice with respect to the clinical environments, including the impact of one’s physical setting
- Learn how to incorporate language that evokes a sense of choice and agency for mindfulness participants to support trauma-informed practice
