Who Could Benefit?

The Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Graduate Group is geared towards participants who have successfully completed at least one full round of a DBT skills group (minimum 6 months), i.e., mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness, and are committed to maintaining their gains, building upon the skills they’ve learned and mastering advanced DBT skills.

This group is ideal for individuals who have a good basis in emotional regulation and want to progress beyond the foundational DBT skills and strengthen their resources. This group is not suitable for participants actively struggling with high-risk behaviours including suicidal or self-harm behaviour, frequent use of crisis services, severe addictions or significant eating disordered behaviour. We encourage such participants to complete, or repeat, the DBT Skills Training Group prior to considering the DBT Graduate Group.

The Group Has Three Main Objectives:

  1. To build a life worth living. Participants will come up with a long-term goal, participate in weekly check-ins to increase accountability and receive support in overcoming barriers.
  2. To consolidate core DBT skill use. Each participant will provide a brief presentation, followed by collaborative validation and/or problem solving areas in which they are stuck or avoiding.
  3. To introduce advanced DBT skills. These skills are meant to help participants live a meaningful life, feel fulfilled and trust themselves.

What is the Curriculum?

  • Values that support your goals with continuous monitoring of progress
  • Participant-led review of core DBT skills to consolidate learning and collaboratively overcome barriers
  • Differentiate between old ways of coping and new ways that support a life worth living
  • Learn how to invest your time to achieve the best return on your investment. What will generate the most impact?
  • Perfectionism
  • Addictive behaviours (substances, eating, social media and more)
  • Painful emotions not covered in DBT (loneliness, powerlessness, self-contempt, fear of being happy and more)
  • Advanced interpersonal effectiveness skills
  • Relationships that are no longer in your best interests
  • Recovery from invalidation
  • Self-compassion
